The Story Behind the Name Sala

Among countless childhood memories, Sala remembers her twin sister Meganne could always pronounce her name. “Meganne could say her name at a very young age,” she explains. “But my name was too long and difficult to pronounce. At first I tried shortening it to Sandra.”

However, since the artist grew up in a household of three languages – French, Spanish and English – Alexandra became confused and began calling herself Sala.

The favourite nickname is still used by her family to date. And when the artist first started painting, the endearment arose again. “I felt my signature, Alexandra Tremblay was too long, but I still wanted something with meaning,” she says.

Sala emerged as her artistic moniker soon after.
